Timber Formwork: What Is It & What Are The Benefits?

Timber is a popular and traditional material used in construction. Typically arranged in a grid pattern for formwork, the timber beams support the weight of wet concrete.

  • Doesn’t require mechanical lifting: Timber is light-weight enough to not require mechanical lifting, unlike other, heavier formwork, such as metal or concrete.
  • Thermal resilience: Pockets of air inside the timber make it much better at resisting hot or cold temperatures. This helps to keep the concrete in good condition.
  • Flexible: Timber is flexible, easy to work with, and quick to assemble and disassemble. This means less time is needed to get the job done.
  • Adaptable: Timber formwork can be arranged to suit any shape of concrete pour.
  • Reusable: It’s ability to be reused makes it a cost-effective and sustainable choice. This formwork material can be used up to six times.

Our Process

Initial phone call

An initial phone call will help us get a sense of the size and scope of the project. Our manager will discuss how we can help fulfil your construction requirements.

To provide an accurate quote, we’ll ask you to send over drawings of the job and a breakdown of the measurements.

Site survey

It might be necessary to do a site survey, in which case we’ll arrange it at a time that suits you.

What’s the process?

Our skilled contractors work effortlessly to ensure a high-quality finish for the installation of timber formwork.

We provide thorough planning and technique, ensuring the wooden components are measured to fit your specific structure. The beams will then be arranged and joined together, using screws and nails. Safety tests and checks will be done to ensure the site is secure and compliant with regulations.

FAQs

Do you have questions about our services? Feel free to browse through our frequently asked questions below. Alternatively, don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or enquiries.

What is timber formwork?

Both metal and timber formwork (aka ‘traditional’ formwork) are methods of creating moulds for reinforced concrete structures.

Which type of formwork is right for our construction project?

Whether traditional formwork or a formwork system is used depends on the size of the structure that is to be built. Larger structures produce more pressure, and so metal formwork can withstand those higher loads. Formwork systems tend to be heavier, and so mechanical means of lifting are often required. Timber is ideal for smaller projects as there is no need for mechanical lifting.

What type of timber is used for formwork?

Timber varieties that are most often used for formwork include spruce, pine and fir. The size can be customised to suit the structure dimensions and load-bearing capacity.

What are your lead times?

The lead time will depend on the size of the project. We have a reliable fleet of contractors that can typically get started within a quick timeframe. Need formwork on short notice? For small projects, we may be able to get started the next day.
